Celler Mas La Mola is the continuation of a tradition that began in 1860 by the Ferrando family. Viticulture and winemaking was taken over by Jordi Masdeu Catala and Alessandro Marchesan. The 7 hectare property of old vine Garnatxa and Carinyena, as well as old vine Garnatxa Blanca and Macabeo are elaborated in the 150 year old “Boutique Winery” in Poboleda.  This reminds us of the passion and knowledge with which they used to look after the vineyards in the last century, and have made possible the preservation of the vines that today are our main source to produce quality wines.

The vineyards are planted in two different areas in the Poboleda district at 350-450 meters above sea level. The 35 year old Macabeo vines used for this wine are grown on low-yielding  gravel soils next to a river which provides vital irrigation to the root system during the hot summer. The other 30% is comprised of old vine Garnatxa Blanca which is planted on llicorella slate slopes with an average production of 450 grams per vine-stock. Or about 2 bunches per plant. A percentage of the wine is storage with the fine lees in stainless steel tanks for more than 4 months, and the rest is full barrel fermented and matured  for  6 months in new French Allier oak barrels. Deep straw yellow color. Intense and aromatic nose, with a perfume of peaches, apricots and a hint of flinty minerality.
Dry and full bodied with ripe fruit notes, it has a creamy texture supported by crisp firm acidity.

"Light, bright yellow-gold.  Dried peach and pear aromas are lifted by notes of lemon pith and minerals, with a subtle herbal quality in the background.  Smooth and fleshy but focused, offering a range of dried and fresh citrus and orchard fruit flavors.  A  licorice nuance carries through the long, gently spicy finish.  Interesting stuff:  this would appeal to fans of white Rhone wines."

MAS LA MOLA NEGRE 2005

MAS LA MOLA NEGRE 2006
D.O.C PRIORAT

The vines are planted in different parcels in the Poboleda district, in a unique terroir of llicorella slate slopes, that are identified by solar orientation, unique microclimate, varietals and different vines-stocks within varietals between 35 to 70 years old Garnatxa and Carinyena. Each vineyard and grape variety is vinified and aged separately, which gives us a great variety of blending possibilities for the final blend of  Mas la Mola. Aged for 15 months in new and second year fine-grained, medium-toasted French Allier oak barrels. Only the best barrels from each year, are used for the final blend of  Mas la Mola. Dark ruby colour.
A bouquet of crushed stones, black cherries, blueberries and spicy, earthy notes. Ripe, concentrated and elegant on the palate with plenty of black cherries and dark berry fruit. Well structured with juicy firm tannins, velvety texture, mouth watering acidity and long complex slate mineral aftertaste.

"
Deep ruby with a bright rim.  Pungent, perfumed bouquet of dark berries, cherry compote, olive and lavender.  Smooth, palate-coating mulberry and cherry flavors are complicated by a building floral quality that carries through to the long, mineral-driven finish.  This is up to the quality of the excellent 2005 version."

The Single Vineyard “La Vinyeta Vella” is a field blend planted on a hillside of pronounced slopes with the characteristic llicorella slate soil, and only with vine stocks of Garnatxa and Carinyena between 65 to 90 years old with an average production of 300 to 350 is found at 350m above sea level. With a long cool maceration, we obtain a progressive extraction and intense concentration from the Garnatxa and Carinyena variety. The wine is aged for 15 months in new fine-grained, medium-toasted French Allier oak barrels. Bright dark ruby red colour. Intense perfume of black cherries, spices and notes of vanilla-chocolate oak on the nose. Full bodied and rich on the palate offering many layers of flavours. Ripe dark berry fruit, slatey-smokey minerality and spices. Massive structure with ripe, grippy, juicy tannins, mineral acidity and complex texture with an endless aftertaste and huge depth of flavours. Only 600 bottles produced.

"Bright ruby.  Highly perfumed nose offers cherry-vanilla, blackberry, cola and oak spices.  Silky and broad on entry, then more taut in the mid-palate, offering sweet red and dark fruit compote flavors and complicating notes of smoky oak and spicecake.  Seamless and approachable now but this wine's depth and finishing energy suggest that it will reward patience."
